Either a striker or an attacking midfielder by trade, the 24-year-old California native began his MLS career in 2007, under Bradley, as a left-back due to a dearth of players in that position caused by an injury crisis. Since then, Bornstein has bounced around the pitch with appearances in attack, in midfield and at the back.

Bradley prefers to use Bornstein in the left-back position for the national team, where he has earned nearly 30 caps since making his debut in 2007.
