Thomas Enevoldsen will not look back fondly on his international debut against Hungary in October 2009. Denmark were already assured of their place at the FIFA World Cup™ when he started the final qualifier of the campaign and, with his team trailing, the 22-year-old was replaced by striker Soren Larsen at half time. The match finished 1-0, registering the Scandinavians’ only defeat on the road to South Africa.

Enevoldsen started his professional career with his home club Aalborg Boldspilklub where he spent four seasons and in April 2008 was voted player of the month by Danish top flight managers. Deciding on a fresh challenge, Enevoldsen signed a five-year deal with Dutch outfit Groningen for a transfer fee of around 1.3 million Euros in 2009. The midfielder quickly developed into a linchpin of the team and it was not long before he caught the attention of national coach Morten Olsen.

The midfielder was named in Olsen’s squad for the first time just months after his arrival in the Eredivise. He was a spectator as Denmark recorded a 1-0 home win over Sweden but, just four days later, was handed his luckless debut against Hungary.

The inauspicious start to his international career does not seem to have caused lasting damage. Four weeks later in November 2009, Enevoldsen retained his squad number and made substitute appearances against FIFA World Cup participants Korea Republic and USA.

Despite his tender years, Enevoldsen has already accumulated experience in the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Cup (now UEFA Europa League) and now has a fantastic opportunity to establish himself as a regular for the ‘Danish Dynamite’ in South Africa.

;
