Paraguay have had an abundance of proven keepers to choose from in recent years, as Diego Barreto knows only too well. The polished custodian has had to dig deep just to earn the third goalkeeping slot in the Albirroja squad for South Africa 2010.

An undisputed first choice with the prestigious Cerro Porteno, the club that gave him his professional debut, Barreto has enjoyed a fine career since forming part of the Paraguay side that claimed a shock silver medal at the Men’s Olympic Football Tournament Athens 2004.

Agile between the posts and quick to venture off his line and snuff out danger, the alert Barreto has regularly showcased his reflexes and litheness at the highest level, qualities that compensate for the fact that he is not the tallest of keepers.

Now 28, he has a wealth of experience to call on, having played in Spain, Switzerland and Argentina in between his spells with Cerro. The popular gloveman started his latest stint with El Ciclón in 2008, though at the end of last year speculation was rife that he could be on the move again.

Diego is joined in the Paraguay squad by his younger brother Edgar, who currently plays for Atalanta and also formed part of the team that won silver in Athens.

;
