National team

A EURO '96? hopeful when he first appeared in the red of Switzerland for an April 1996 friendly victory against Wales, Wicky made the squad for the final tournament where he played once against Scotland. Although subsequent qualifying campaigns did not prove so fruitful, Wicky would pass the 50-cap mark on the path to Portugal.

UEFA EURO 2004? qualifying

One of six Swiss players to feature in all eight qualifiers, Wicky had a key role in the build-up to the second goal in the victory against the Republic of Ireland which enabled Switzerland to win Group 10.

Club

Born in April 1977, Wicky first made waves with FC Sion in 1993\/94, his mature displays belying his tender years - never more so than when he scored, aged 17, to help knock Olympique de Marseille out of the UEFA Cup. Having won the Swiss Cup with Sion in 1995 and 1996, he brought the curtain down on his career at the Tourbillon stadium in style as the club claimed the Swiss double in 1996\/97.

1997: Wicky moved to SV Werder Bremen and did not waste time in adapting to the demands of the Bundesliga. A German Cup winner in 1999, Wicky played over 90 league games for Bremen before joining Club Atlético de Madrid for €1m midway through the 2000\/01 season. However, he struggled to get regular football in the Spanish capital and returned to Germany with Hamburger SV in December 2001.
