Tough-tackling midfielder Russell, or more usually, Russ Penn was another player to really make a career breakthrough at Aggborough in the 2005/06 season.

Prior to initially joining the club in the summer or 2005, Russ began his career as a trainee with Birmingham City before joining the youth team set up at Scunthorpe United, where he spent three years before leaving after Brian Laws opted not to offer him professional terms.

Then-Club Captain Mark Jackson put in a good work with ex-Harriers boss Stuart Watkiss who handed the youngster a one-year deal after an impressive trial spell.

First-team football was hard to come by for Penn at first, though, and he was sent on loan to Alvechurch to get some match practice - it was arguably one of the most important spells of his career, as he returned to Aggborough looking fitter, sharper, and a million times hungrier.

It showed, too. After finally making the push through to the Harriers first team, Russ was very rarely out of the picture, becoming a hit with supporters for his no-nonsense displays. Newly-installed Manager Mark Yates clearly liked what he saw, too, and rewarded the player with a new two and a half year contract in late January 2006.

Never afraid to go in at full-pelt to any tackle whatsoever, he also scored one of the goals of the season in Harriers 2-1 win over Bradford City in the Football League Trophy.

He'll remain at the club until at least the end of the 2007/08 season.
