National team

Pletikosa appeared in the 1999 FIFA World Youth Championship before making his full debut, as a 20-year-old substitute, later that year in a friendly international against Denmark. He established himself in the side in qualifying for the 2002 FIFA World Cup, where he played in all three of Croatia's matches.

UEFA EURO 2004? qualifying

The only Croatian to play every minute of all eight qualifying matches, Pletikosa kept six clean sheets in Group 8, conceding just four goals. He also kept Slovenia at bay in the second leg of their play-off to help secure a 1-0 win and qualification for Portugal.

Club

He began his career with HNK Hajduk Split in the 1996\/97 season, making one appearance. Pletikosa doubled that figure the following term before finally breaking through in 1998\/99, playing 19 times. He won a Croatian Cup the following term and in August 2002 made his mark on Hajduk's UEFA Cup campaign, scoring penalties in both legs of the tie against Gí G?tu of the Faroe Islands. The keeper was named the Croatian Footballer of the Year in 2002, saying: "This has been both a good and a bad year because I see myself as part of the team and I regret that we did so poorly at the World Cup finals, although my goalkeeping was very good."

2003\/04: Left Croatia in a €2m deal along with team-mate Darijo Srna to sign for FC Shakhtar Donetsk on a five-year contract. He helped the Ukrainian side defeat FC Sheriff Tiraspol in UEFA Champions League qualifying before Shakhtar were eliminated by FC Lokomotiv Moskva.
