Profile:
Son of a professional footballer (his father Flavio played full-back for Ascoli in the 1980s), Mattia was born in Ascoli Piceno on 20 March 1991. He came through the youth academy at Ascoli before moving to Inter. He won several titles with the Nerazzurri academy: two league titles (Giovanissimi U-15s and Allievi U-16s) as well as the Viareggio tournament with the Primavera side. He represented Italy at every level from U-17 to U-19 and competed at two European championships for his age group. In the summer of 2010 he moved to Genoa, making his Serie A debut with the Rossoblu.

On 12 September 2010, Genoa 1-3 Chievo proved to be a bad day for the Liguria-based side but a memorable fixture for Destro, as he scored after just 6 minutes. He was always destined for the big time. He also had success with Gigi Casiraghi's Under-21 side, winning his first cap on 7 September 2010 against Wales after replacing Okaka in the 80th minute. He scored his first goal for the Azzurrini in only his second cap on 8 October 2010, a 2-0 win over Belarus in the first leg of the play-off for the European Championships. The following season (2011/12) Siena took him on loan with a co-ownership option and, with Sannino as coach, he showed his enormous promise: not only for the 12 league goals, but also for his qualities as a team player which helped the Tuscan side to stay up.

His performances caught the attention of Italy head coach Cesare Prandelli and he was picked in the Azzurri's 32-man pre-tournament squad but didn't make the final 23 which travelled to Poland and Ukraine. He did, however, become the main target in the 2012 summer transfer window. Following lengthy negotiations between with Siena and Genoa, who each owned half of the player, Roma signed him on a five-year contract. With the wily Zeman as coach and the help of experienced team-mates Totti and De Rossi he looks set to become a star in Italian football, and beyond.
