Profile:
Craft and graft could be the watchwords of Christian Vieri's style: blessed with bullish strength and nimble feet, the Australian-raised striker has scored goals with ease at every level.

National team

After an international debut against Moldova in 1997 in which he scored Italy抯 1,000th goal, Vieri was electric at the following year's FIFA World Cup, scoring five times. After missing UEFA EURO 2000? through injury he was in determined mood at Korea/Japan, where he scored four of his team's five goals to move alongside Paolo Rossi and Roberto Baggio in the Azzurri's all-time World Cup scorers chart.

UEFA EURO 2004? qualifying

First choice when fit, Vieri led the line in five matches, scoring both goals in the 2-0 home defeat of Finland and ending his campaign with a goal in the final 4-0 victory against Azerbaijan which won Italy Group 9.

Club

The 2003/04 season heralded Vieri's fifth term at FC Internazionale - representing a marathon commitment for the much-travelled player. Born in Bologna, he played for Torino Calcio and Pisa Calcio before enjoying decent returns in the 1993/94 and 1994/95 seasons for US Ravenna and AC Venezia.

1995: Finally in Serie A with Atalanta BC, Vieri struck seven goals in 19 outings to prompt a move to Juventus FC. Eight goals in 23 matches helped the club to the Scudetto in 1997 but he did not hang around to help the Turin club defend it, opting instead for Club Atl閠ico de Madrid where he scored 24 goals in as many games.

1998: Then he returned to Italy to S.S. Lazio, with whom he lifted the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. In July 1999 he was on the road again, however, to Inter in a world-record €50m deal (€40m plus Diego Simeone). In 2003, he finished as the top striker in Serie A, but his 24 goals in 23 games could only lift Inter to second place in the table. He also scored his first-ever UEFA Champions League goal as Inter made the last four.

2003/04: Although injury restricted him to just 22 league outings, he performed superbly, scoring 13 goals. Was not so prolific in Europe as Inter were eliminated from the Champions League and UEFA Cup.
