A pacy and skilful striker who is a fine dribbler, Maris Verpakovskis is renowned for scoring spectacular goals and matches his undoubted ability with a strong work ethic.

National team

Having worked his way through Latvia's youth ranks, Verpakovskis made his full international debut in a UEFA EURO 2000? qualifier against Greece – and scored within 25 minutes of coming on as a substitute. He was on the fringes of the 2002 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.

UEFA EURO 2004? qualifying

Verpakovskis was firmly established when Latvia began their bid to reach Portugal. He scored six times in ten games, including the only goal of the final Group 4 qualifier away to section winners Sweden. The best was yet to come, though, as he registered the only goal of the play-off first leg against Turkey, and then struck in the return four days later to help his side to a memorable aggregate triumph.

Club

Beginning his career with hometown club FHK Liepajas Metalurgs, Verpakovskis was part of the team that claimed second place in the Latvian top flight in 1999 and third a year later, when he moved to Skonto FC.

2000: More glory followed with Latvia's most successful club, with whom Verpakovskis won three league titles and two Latvian Cups. Verpakovskis enjoyed the best season of his career to date in 2003, scoring 22 goals in 25 league matches and being voted Latvian player of the year.

2003/04: In late December he opted to join Ukrainian side FC Dynamo Kyiv, signing a five-year deal.
