This lightning-fast left-back was a surprise, eleventh-hour inclusion by coach Javier Aguirre in his squad for the pre-South Africa training camp for Mexico's home-based players.

Although he won his first cap for the national team against Chile in 2008, Jorge Torres did not appear to feature among the players on Aguirre's radar until the beginning of this year, when he was selected for three friendly matches. The 22-year-old's performances convinced his coach to retain him in his party for the finals in South Africa.

Torres is yet another talent to have emerged from the youth system at Atlas de Guadalajara, for whom he made his debut in 2006. He gradually earned himself a starting place with the Rojinegros, as well as attracting the attention of then national coach Sven-Goran Eriksson, who gave him a three-minute run-out against Chile. The Swede's reasons? The youngster's great pace and ability on the ball.

He is not a typical left-back but rather a very attack-minded player capable of getting to the byline and delivering a cross, albeit with enough positional sense to ensure he is ready for his defensive duties when called on. In a position without any one outstanding candidate, Torres will look to at least make himself a good back-up option for Aguirre, should one be required.
