Profile:
Hailing from Australia, central defender Avraam Papadopoulos is one of only three members of the Greece squad, along with Sotiris Ninis and Loukas Vyntra, to have been born outside the country.

The chunky stopper has spent his entire professional career in Greece, however, progressing through the youth ranks at Digenis Lakkomatos before joining the Aris Saloniki academy.

He stepped up to the first team in 2002, playing initially as a withdrawn striker before being deployed in more defensive positions, first as a holding midfielder and then as a defender. After a spell at right-back, in 2006 he finally switched to the centre of defence, where he has remained ever since.

Papadopoulos has retained his aerial and shooting skills from his striking days and has been pushed back up front on occasion, never more effectively than in a 2007 UEFA Cup meeting with Spain’s Real Zaragoza, when he scored the goal that took Aris into the next round.

Though linked with several big European clubs, he remained at Aris until 2008, eventually signing for his current club Olympiakos.

During his time in Thessaloniki he won nine U-21 caps and received his first full international call-up in February 2008, having gone on since then to play 12 times for his country.
