Profile:
He may be little known outside Mexico, but Pablo Barrera is considered one of the potential stars of the Tricolor team in South Africa. A speedy right-sided attacker, Barrera is skillful on the ball and has a fierce shot from distance. One such strike won his club, Pumas, the Clausura in Mexico last year.

Before joining his international colleagues at their pre-FIFA World Cup camp in April, he was Pumas’ top scorer for the season so far with six goals in 13 games – a total that is more admirable for the fact he plays in a deeper position for his club than for his country.

Barrera participated in the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Canada in 2007 and that same year received his first senior call-up. Not until 2009, however, did he become a regular under present coach Javier Aguirre.

In the CONCACAF Gold Cup and FIFA World Cup™ qualifiers, the Mexico coach used him consistently as a second-half substitute, and he seldom failed to make a positive impact. He is likely to fill a similar role in South Africa which, according to the consensus among Mexican football watchers, may well be his last international tournament before moving to a club abroad.
