Nikolaos Spiropoulos has gained a reputation as a buccaneering left-back for both club and country, using his strength and speed to great effect in defence and attack.

His all-round skills are much admired by Henk ten Cate, his coach at Panathinaikos, who during the 2008/09 season asked the club’s directors to go out and buy him “a Spiropoulos for the right wing”.

Prior to arriving in the Greek capital, the flying full-back learned his trade at PAS Giannina, spending three seasons there before making 51 appearances for Panionios and then joining Pana in the middle of 2008.

Despite impressing on the left flank for many seasons, he had to wait until November 2007 for his first taste of international action, a UEFA EURO 2008 qualifying match against Malta.

A few months later Otto Rehhagel included Spiropoulos in his squad for the finals in Austria and Switzerland. Though Greece’s European defence ended in failure, the Panathinaikos full-back has held on to his place in the side, becoming a regular first-choice since then.
