A true all-rounder, with playmaking skills, goalscoring instincts and two good feet, Christian Poulsen is one of Denmark's hottest talents.
National team
The midfield player graduated from the Under-21 to senior international side in November 2001 when he played in a 1-1 draw against the Netherlands in Copenhagen. After winning a place in the Danish 2002 FIFA World Cup squad, he started one game and came off the bench twice at Korea/Japan.
UEFA EURO 2004? qualifying
Poulsen started Denmark's opening three qualifiers before missing the same amount of games through injury. He returned from the bench in the penultimate game against Romania before playing in the draw in Bosnia-Herzegovina which sealed Denmark's finals passage.
Club
He was an instant hit when FC K?benhavn spotted his huge talent at Holb?k B&I and quickly turned him into one of the key performers as the Copenhagen side won the title in 2001. In November of that year Poulsen rebuffed an opportunity to become the most-expensive signing in Birmingham City FC's history - €4.75m - before agreeing a €3.5m deal with FC Schalke 04 which would see him move to the Bundesliga the following summer. Schalke general manager Rudi Assauer said: "Christian is the shooting star in the Danish league and a very in-demand player."
2002: After scoring eleven goals in 44 games for K?benhavn, Poulsen started his four-year contract at the AufSchalke Arena on 1 July, going on to make 24 appearances as the Ruhr club finished seventh in the Bundesliga.

His return to Denmark in Schalke colours for a UEFA Cup tie on 26 November 2003 was not a pleasant one, Br?ndby IF supporters booed him relentlessly for being a former FCK player. |
