One of the rising stars of German football, right-sided defender Andreas Hinkel is a tremendous athlete whose consistent club displays were rewarded with international honours.

National team

Hinkel's raids caught the eye of Rudi V?ller, who handed the player his Germany debut in the 1-0 victory against Serbia and Montenegro on 30 April 2003. A second cap followed in a friendly against Canada on 1 June when he again came on as a half-time substitute.

UEFA EURO 2004? qualifying

Five times an unused substitute, Hinkel played his first competitive game for his country in Germany's final qualifier, a 3-0 victory against Iceland in October 2003.

Club

As a ten-year-old, Hinkel joined VfB Stuttgart in 1992 from TSV Leutenbach and progressed through the youth teams, winning a German championship with Stuttgart's Under-16 team. In 1999/00, Hinkel was promoted to the first-team squad, although he spent much of the season with Stuttgart's reserve side in the third division. He made his debut the following term and went on to become a regular in 2001/02, playing every minute of the club's first 26 games before picking up a shoulder injury which ruled him out for six weeks.

2002/03: Hinkel enjoyed his best season as Stuttgart surprised many observers by finishing second in the Bundesliga to qualify automatically for the UEFA Champions League. Coolness personified, Hinkel missed just one league game and was also involved in each of Stuttgart's eight UEFA Cup games - a campaign which ended with a fourth-round defeat by Celtic FC.
