A speedy and skilful attacking midfielder with an uncanny ability to shake off his markers, Walter Martinez is a regular feature in Reinaldo Rueda’s squad selections. Part of the reason for that is the versatility that Martinez offers and his ability to switch positions during the course of a game.

Born in the Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa, he began his career with Club Deportivo Victoria in the northern city of La Ceiba before crossing town to join Club Deportivo Vida. From there it was on to Marathon, one of the big names in Honduran football, where his solid form attracted the attention of several foreign clubs.

His next destination was Beijing Guoan in China, a familiar port of call for many of his compatriots in recent years. Earning a reputation as one of the most lethal finishers in the Chinese top flight, he scored 14 goals in 44 appearances for the club before returning to Marathon via Spain, where he enjoyed a brief stay with Alaves.

Martinez has proved his worth under Reinaldo Rueda, hitting 11 goals for La H in a little over 30 games, a fine return for a midfielder.
