Profile

The captain of Austria, Andreas Ivanschitz has worn the armband proudly throughout the run-up to UEFA EURO 2008™. A creative left-footer with fine technique and a thumping shot, he has been a regular for his country since 2003 but is still only 24.

Made his full debut for SK Rapid Wien aged 16 but not a fixture in team until Josef Hickersberger became coach in 2002/03.

First international goal in UEFA EURO 2004 qualifier v Czech Republic; second in opening 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifier against England to give Austria 2-2 draw after being two goals down.

Austria's youngest ever captain when he skippered the side at 19 years and 361 days old.

Played in all ten 2006 World Cup qualifiers (but no more goals).

Austrian championship winner with Rapid in 2004/05 and UEFA Champions League participant following season (five games, no goals).

Joined Panathinaikos FC in 2006 – no trophies or UEFA Champions League participation in two seasons with Athens club; three goals in 2007/08 Greek Super League.

Nicknamed 'the Austrian Beckham' despite favouring left foot over right.

Did you know?

Ivanschitz started 20 consecutive games for Austria from March 2005 to June 2007 but is also an accomplished piano player as well as international-class footballer.
