Profile:

Daniel Monberg is the man whose 92nd-minute strike in the 3-2 win away to Portugal proved to be the decisive moment in European qualifying Group A for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™. "Even today I can still hardly believe it when I look back at that match. The Danish press said that not even Hans Christian Andersen could have written a better fairy-tale! It was a goal that united the team and the fans and brought both sets of people closer together. I feel really honoured to have scored it", enthused Daniel Jensen in an exclusive interview with FIFA.com.

His injury-time winner opened the door to South Africa, and the 'Danish Dynamite' needed no second bidding to end their six-year barren stretch of not qualifying for a major tournament.

Monberg plied his domestic trade for such teams as Copenhagen, Heerenveen and Murcia before joining Werder Bremen in 2004, with whom he has gone on to win the German Cup amongst other honours. The midfielder was part of the Denmark team which reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Euro 2004, and a similar run to the last eight in South Africa would represent a great achievement for coach Morten Olsen's men. The Danes will have their work cut out in Group E against the Netherlands, Japan and Cameroon.

"It would be great to win our opening match when you look at the quality of the other opponents, but a point against the Dutch would still be a very satisfactory start," said Monberg. "To be quite honest, it will be very important for our confidence that we get a decent result from the first match. That said, even if we lose, then we will still have two games left in which to make sure that we qualify."

Honours:
Reaching the quarter finals of the Euro 2004 with Denmark
Reaching the Champions League 2006 with Werder Bremen and 2000 with SC Heerenveen
