Joseph Akpala is a Nigerian footballer. He currently plays for SV Werder Bremen.

Akpala is a product of the Pepsi Football Academy in Lagos. His first professional contract came in April 2003 with Bendel United Football Club, a Division One club in Benin City.

Akpala later joined Bendel Insurance FC, Benin City in the Premier Division of the Nigerian Professional League, in February 2005. He was to finish as joint top scorer with 13 goals in 19 games.

Akpala was signed by the Royal Charleroi Sporting Club in the Belgian Jupiler League in January 2006. He wears the no 27 jersey.

Akpala had a very successful campaign in the 2007/08 Belgian League campaign. He topped the scorers chart with 18 goals.

In the first transfer window of the Jupiler League Akpala joined Club Brugge on the 18th July signing a contract until 2013.

So far this season Akpala has played 27 league games and has scored 13 times He has also scored 6 goals in the UEFA Europa League.

On 24 May 2012 the Daily Express reported that West Ham United were ready to secure the services of the Nigerian international for £2Million however, They faced competition from Celtic for the 19-goal Club Brugge striker.

However, on the 22nd of August, Werder Bremen signed Akpala for a fee believed to be €1.5 million.
