The then-national serviceman was a formidable presence in goal that year, which culminated in a S.League championship medal won with SAFFC. His full international debut came against Uruguay and his first tournament with the Lions was to prove no less a baptism of fire.

The 2002 Tiger Cup would prove a disappointing end to what should have been a memorable year for Shahril, and the young keeper bore the brunt of much criticism. But agile shotstopper been resilient enough to bounce back from the setback and once again challenge for a first team place with the Lions.
