Dragan Mrdja began his career as a creative second forward, but has since evolved into a prolific penalty-box predator. It is a development that gradually convinced Radomir Antic to take the 26-year-old to the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ ahead of, among others, Dejan Lekic and Miralem Sulejmani
Mrdja started out at to Crvena Zvezda in 2001. He won one league title and two domestic cups during his four years at the club, although in truth he made minor contributions to these conquests.
The 1.87m player moved to Lierse in 2005. However, he failed to make his mark in Belgium, where he spent the second of his two seasons there on loan at Zulte Waregem. He switched to Russian side Khimki thereafter, but was again afforded limited playing time.
It was back home for Mrdja in 2008, and he has since thrived in the colours of Vojvodina. Indeed, his 13 goals propelled the Voša to a runners-up finish in the Serbian Super Liga in 2008/09, while he ended up as last season’s 22-goal leading marksman as his club ran home in fifth.
Mrdja made his Serbia debut in 2008, and scored his first goals for his country in a 3-0 win over Japan in April. |
