Profile:
Cho Yong-Hyung is an all-round defender who can operate as a centre-back, full-back, or defensive midfielder.

Voted in the K-League’s Best XI in his debut season with Bucheon SK in 2005, Cho went on to establish himself in the star-studded Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma side that finished runners-up in 2007. The following season saw the right-back return to his former club as the leader of Jeju United’s rearguard.

His versatility and ability to read the game did not go unnoticed by coach Huh Jung-Moo, who awarded Cho his first cap in the coach’s first game in charge against Chile in January 2008. He has been an ever-present for his country thereafter, playing in 10 qualifying matches for South Africa 2010 alongside his club team-mate Kang Min-Soo.

Despite being relatively slim for a central defender in the modern game, Cho more than made up for the disadvantage with his good sense of positioning and tackling ability. In fact, he is Korea Republic’s one and only centre-back who has featured in all of four crucial encounters with Saudi Arabia and Iran, playing the full 90 minutes on each occasion.

Cho is already regarded as the successor to Hong Myung-Bo, Korea Republic’s legendary centre half who took part in four FIFA World CupsÔ. And for the 26-year-old, the finals in South Africa could be a turning point of what promises to be an illustrious career.
