Quick and lithe, Paul Freier was an out-and-out winger in his youth. His game has matured as he has gained in experience, and, such is his ability in possession, he is now equally effective as a playmaker.

National team

Rudi V?ller ran the rule over Freier ahead of the 2002 FIFA World Cup, handing him his debut in a 7-0 defeat of Kuwait that May. Although the coach resisted selecting him for Korea/Japan, the midfield player was soon an automatic choice.

UEFA EURO 2004? qualifying

Made three appearances as a substitute before playing his first full game for his country on 11 June 2003, a 2-0 defeat of the Faroe Islands. A broken bone in his right foot ended his campaign and he missed the final three matches as Germany won Group 5.

Club

Schooled at VfL Bochum, he first appeared in the 1999/00 season, playing six matches as the Ruhr side finished behind 1.FC K?ln to win promotion to the Bundesliga. The club found the going tough in the top flight, suffering an immediate relegation. Freier enjoyed a fine 2001/02, scoring seven goals in another promotion season before club and player found their feet among the German élite.
