Profile:

Despite his tender years, Marcell Jansen is already considered one of his country's most experienced internationals. The Hamburg wide man made a name for himself as the youngest player in the Germany squad at the 2006 FIFA World Cup™ and also featured at UEFA EURO 2008 in Austria and Switzerland, where he made five appearances en route to the final. Coach Joachim Low has once again placed in trust in the 24-year-old for South Africa 2010 and will be hoping his dynamic runs down the flanks and expert deliveries will prove a handful for opposition defences.

Jansen is equally comfortable at left-back, though his true qualities lie in the final third, where the 1.91m whirlwind is almost impossible to stop once he hits full speed. Low's predecessor Jurgen Klinsmann realised this early on, handing the then Borussia Monchengladbach defender his international debut against Slovakia in Bratislava back in September 2005. Since then, Jansen has made over 30 appearances for the national side.

Jansen left hometown club Gladbach to join Germany's most successful club Bayern Munich in the summer of 2007, although he struggled to secure a regular starting spot in Bavaria and moved on to northerners Hamburg the following year. He soon established himself as one of the club's most consistent performers and despite a number of niggling injuries, put in a number of matchwinning performances in his first season.

Injury almost kept Jansen out of South Africa 2010 after he tore ankle ligaments at the end of March, but the EURO 2008 runner up won his race to be fit and is now aiming to make an impact on the world stage this June/July.
