An indefatigable midfield player, Fabian Ernst acts as a defensive shield in front of the rearguard, picking up possession and setting moves in motion.
National team
A commanding presence in the Germany side beaten on penalties by the Republic of Ireland in the final of the UEFA European Under-18 Championship in 1998, Ernst made his full international debut in a 7-0 friendly international victory against Kuwait in May 2002, only to then miss out on selection for that summer's FIFA World Cup.
UEFA EURO 2004? qualifying
With Dietmar Hamann, Torsten Frings and Jens Jeremies all ruled out for the final fixture against Iceland, Ernst returned to the fold nearly 14 months after his last cap against Bulgaria, but did not get off the bench as the Germans sealed their Group 5 triumph.
Club
Ernst began his career with Hannover 96, making his debut in the 1996/97 season and going on to win a regular first-team place. He left the club on a high for Hamburger SV in 1998, having won promotion to the 2. Bundesliga. Ernst was to play in the division above that, though, helping Hamburg to finish seventh and third in his two seasons at the Volkparkstadion.
2000: Following a transfer to SV Werder Bremen Ernst began to produce the form which would win him international honours in the future. Twenty-two bookings and two red cards in the Bundesliga over three seasons, however, indicated that his enthusiasm had to be kept in check.
Did you know?
In April 2003 he scored the winner with a sensational 50-metre lob as Bremen became the first team to beat BV Borussia Dortmund at the Westfalenstadion since 2001.
