A calm and correct defender, Frank Baumann's main strengths are his positional play and tactical awareness. Pairing hard tackling with fine technique he gives his team-mates confidence and security.
National team
Despite being a regular in German squads following his debut against Norway in November 1999, he was not initially in Rudi V?ller's thinking for the 2002 FIFA World Cup. However, he was called back into the squad after Christian W?rns was forced to pull out with an injury and made one appearance at Korea/Japan, in the second-round victory against Paraguay.
UEFA EURO 2004? qualifying
Having failed to feature in Germany's first five matches, Baumann was promoted for the final three qualifiers, forming part of a defence which conceded just one goal to cement first place in Group 5.
Club
Baumann started his playing career at TSV Grombühl, a small club in Würzburg where he was coached by his father, Josef, and as a youth player he moved to 1. FC Nürnberg. The defender excelled in the 2. Bundesliga, scoring ten goals over two seasons which culminated in Nürnberg's promotion in 1998. Their stay in the German élite was to last just one season, though, and Baumann left for SV Werder Bremen following relegation.
1999: Baumann soon settled at the Weserstadion, scoring five times in 32 Bundesliga appearances and ending the season with a German Cup runners-up medal following a final defeat by FC Bayern München. In November 2002, by which time he was captaining Bremen, he signed a three-year contract extension.

The first Würzburg-born player to take part in a World Cup, Baumann was the 800th player to represent Germany.
