Profile

The last time Johan Vonlanthen appeared in a UEFA European Championship match, against France at the 2004 final tournament in Portugal, he made history by becoming the competition's youngest ever goalscorer. His career has blown hot and cold since then, with fitness a constant worry, but at his best he offers skill, pace and opportunism.

Born in Colombia but represents Switzerland on account of a Swiss stepfather.

Joined BSC Young Boys, making top-flight debut just 23 days after his 16th birthday.

Left for PSV Eindhoven and did sufficiently well to earn late call-up for Switzerland's UEFA EURO 2004™ squad.

Goal v France in Coimbra scored at age of 18 years, four months and 20 days, beating tournament record set just four days earlier, on same ground, against Switzerland, by England's Wayne Rooney.

Hat-trick v Faroe Islands on FIFA World Cup debut (as stand-in for injured Alexander Frei) but missed finals through injury.

Had loan spells with Brescia Calcio and NAC Breda while at PSV; signed for FC Salzburg in 2006 and won Austrian title under veteran Italian coach Giovanni Trapattoni.

Vonlanthen moved to Switzerland at the age of 14, residing in the German-speaking sector of the border town of Fribourg.
