Profile

Not to be confused with the celebrated Spanish golfer of the same name, Sergio García will hope to make international sporting headlines of his own at UEFA EURO 2008 having received an unexpected call-up from coach Luis Aragonés. A feisty, willing front-runner, the Catalan is more accustomed to creating goals for others than scoring them himself.

Joined FC Barcelona as a boy; prolific strike-rate in early days for reserve team and national youth selections but unable to break into Bara first team.

Left for Levante UD but relegated in first season – top-scored for Valencia-based club with seven goals.

Moved to Real Zaragoza; disappointing first season followed by impressive second, in which he formed exciting attacking trident with Argentinian internationals Diego Milito and Pablo Aimar, taking club to sixth place and into UEFA Cup.

Maintained personal good form in 2007/08 but Zaragoza suffered shock relegation after winning only three of last 16 games.

Did you know?

It was on the day after Sergio García received news of his UEFA EURO 2008 call-up that Zaragoza were relegated (following a 3-2 loss at RCD Mallorca).
