After beginning his career as a right-back, Jurijs Laizans moved into midfield where his vision and fine range of passing can be used to the full. A hard-working and competitive player, he is also comfortable on the ball and possesses good dribbling skills.
National team
Having represented Latvia at Under-16, Under-18 and Under-21 levels, Laizans made his full international debut on 6 February 1998 against Georgia. A regular in the side during the ultimately disappointing UEFA EURO 2000? and 2002 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaigns, he won his 50th cap in November 2003.

Laizans scored twice as Latvia finished second in Group 4 and went on to claim a place in the finals in Portugal - including the winner in Poland, a match he was sent off in. Laizans also struck his country's first goal in the second leg of the play-offs against Turkey, on what was his 50th appearance.
Club
A product of Skonto FC's youth academy, Laizans broke into the first team in 1997, helping the club to three titles and two Latvian Cups.
2000: He moved to PFC CSKA Moskva in 2000, winning the Russian Cup in 2002 and the league championship a year later. He was also named Latvian footballer of the year in 2002. The arrival of Jirí Jaro?ik cost Laizans his place in the starting XI, however, and the lack of match sharpness meant he lost his status as an automatic choice in the national side.
