Profile:

Has become a national hero, after scoring the winning penalty that saw Australia reach the World Cup finals in Germany 2006. This follows on from his success at the 2004 Olympic Games and then 2005 Confederations Cup campaigns, where he scored three and four goals respectively. Plays his club football in the tough Spanish Primera Liga with CD Alaves after three seasons at Osasuna. A real goal poacher inside the penalty box, he can also hold the ball up well and create opportunities for his teammates.

A striker whose height, power and timing make him a penalty-box threat, John Aloisi is the only Australian to have played in Europe's three toughest leagues - Spain's Primera Division (ex-Osasuna, now Alaves), England's Premier League (Coventry City) and Italy's Serie A (Cremonese).

His best year in a Socceroos shirt was undoubtedly 2005 as he scored four goals in three games at the FIFA Confederations Cup before striking the winning penalty against Uruguay to confirm Australia’s qualification for the 2006 FIFA World Cup™.
