A solid tackler, Dzintars Zirnis is an attack-minded right-back who gets forward whenever possible.

National team

An Under-18 and Under-21 international, Zirnis made his senior debut for Latvia in August 1997 in a friendly against Azerbaijan, but has subsequently struggled to hold down a regular place in the side.

UEFA EURO 2004? qualifying

Zirnis appeared in three Group 4 qualifiers and was dismissed in the final game against Sweden as Latvia clinched second place in the section. Suspension therefore ruled him out of the play-off first leg against Turkey, although he returned for the second match as his team secured their passage to Portugal.

Club

He began his career with his hometown club FHK Liepajas Metalurgs, and has experienced European competition in one form or another every season since 1998/99. By making 27 appearances in the Latvian top flight in 2003, Zirnis helped Metalurgs to second position behind perennial champions Skonto FC and a place in the UEFA Cup.
