An outstanding young player who became Hearts' first-choice keeper in 2003-2004 after several match-winning performances, including a stunning display in the UEFA Cup tie at Bordeaux. In addition, in May 2004, Craig earned his first international cap, playing for Scotland against Trinidad & Tobago. He has also appeared for the national Youth, U21 and B teams.

Craig has been associated with the club since the age of 12, playing for Tynecastle Boys' Club and Hearts Boys' Club. He signed a full professional contract in 1999 and became a star prospect in the Youth and U21 sides. Indeed, in May 2000, Craig played his part in the Youth Cup Final victory over Rangers and the following season he was in the young squad that won the Youth League Championship.

The tall shot-stopper was loaned to Cowdenbeath in September 2001, but was recalled in December after an injury to Antti Niemi. He then made his competitive debut in October 2002 against Livingston and was on the bench for the remainder of the season. The confident and athletic keeper took over from Tepi Moilanen in October 2003 and became a worthy winner of the Bank of Scotland Young Player of the Season award after helping Hearts to claim third place in the Premier League.

Craig gained further European and international experience last term and his sure handling and commanding performances, particularly in the World Cup matches, should confirm his place as a Scotland regular. Although he will always be a target for other clubs, Craig signed a new contract in 2005 that ties him to Hearts.

Following the departure of Steven Pressley in December 2006, Craig was appointed to the role of club captain, something which he described as an 'honour'.
