A player who has performed at the highest level in the Netherlands, Italy and Spain, Michael Reiziger is a speedy man-marker whose defensive skills and ability to act as an extra attacking force from deep have made him an indispensable figure for his country.

National team

Reiziger won his first cap against Norway in October 1994. He was ever present at EURO '96? and played in five games in the 1998 FIFA World Cup, where the Dutch lost on penalties in the semi-finals. The team met a similar fate at UEFA EURO 2000? on home soil, although Reiziger did not feature in the knockout stages.

UEFA EURO 2004? qualifying

Something of a punctuated campaign saw Reiziger play just four full matches despite appearing in all ten squads for the group matches and the play-off victory against Scotland.

Club

With AFC Ajax from the age of 12, he made his debut five years later in 1990 under Leo Beenhakker. Reiziger never gained a regular place though, and in 1992 was loaned to FC Volendam. He then joined FC Groningen for the 1993/94 campaign, helping them to avoid relegation. Ajax's new coach Louis van Gaal recalled Reiziger the following year, switching him to right-back from midfield. He ended the season a UEFA Champions League and Eredivisie winner.

1996: AC Milan - who had been beaten by Ajax in the 1995 Champions League final - were sufficiently impressed by Reiziger to sign him on a free transfer in 1996, but injury prevented him making a mark.

1997: Only 12 months later Reiziger moved to FC Barcelona where he proved a versatile and reliable player as the Catalans won the league and Spanish Cup - the Dutchman scoring the winning penalty - in his first season.

Reiziger said he fell in love with football at the age of four when his father took him to watch Ajax.
