Profile

A tall left-footed striker who has found the net frequently for Switzerland in the build-up to UEFA EURO 2008™, Marco Streller will be on familiar terrain during the group stage as St. Jakob-Park is the stadium in which he plays regularly for his club FC Basel 1893.

Basel-born, he began career with local club and shot to prominence with 13 goals during autumn of 2003/04 campaign, earning himself debut for Switzerland and move to VfB Stuttgart.

Career stalled in Germany with serious injury and lack of first-team opportunities then semi-revived through loan spell at 1. FC Köln in 2006.

First international strike was vital away-goal decider in 2006 FIFA World Cup play-off v Turkey in Istanbul (4-4 on aggregate).

Appeared at finals but missed penalty in second-round shoot-out defeat v Ukraine (in Cologne, his then home stadium).

Returned to Stuttgart and won 2006/07 Bundesliga; frequent substitute and back-up striker to first-choice pair of Cacau and Mario Gomez.

Came back to Basel in summer 2007; won domestic double – injured in spring but returns to score in cup final (4-1 v AC Bellinzona).

Did you know?

Streller's only UEFA European Championship appearance before this summer's tournament was his debut – a qualifier for the 2004 event against the Republic of Ireland in Basel. He then missed the finals in Portugal due to a broken leg.
