National team

A member of the Czech Republic side which unexpectedly emerged victorious at the 2002 UEFA European Under-21 Championship, Jiránek went on to make his international debut in a 4-1 friendly victory against neighbours Slovakia in August the same year.

Having appeared twice as a substitute, Jiránek made his first start against the Netherlands in September 2003, a 3-1 victory in Prague. He retained his place for the final game in Group 3, a 3-2 defeat of Austria.

Club

Born in Prague in May 1979, Jiránek made his debut for CU Bohemians Praha in the 1996\/97 season. He spent his formative years at the V Dolicku stadium before moving to FC Slovan Liberec midway through 1999\/00.

2000: A Czech Cup winner in his first term, Jiránek only stayed with Slovan for another half-season before opting to try his luck in Italy, signing for Reggina Calcio in 2000\/01. Although he was unable to prevent Reggina slipping out of Serie A in his first season, he helped the club regain their top-flight status at the first attempt and then appeared 27 times as they narrowly avoided an instant return to Serie B in 2002\/03.

Did you know?

Jiránek’s fiancée Diana Kobzanová was Miss Czech Republic in 2001.

Defender Jiranek can play in several different positions, but is most likely to challenge Zdenek Grygera for the right back spot.

His career only truly started to blossom when he was picked up by Serie A side Reggina in October 2000.

He made his national team debut in August 2002 and was a member of the Czech Republic’s UEFA Euro 2004 squad.

His performances in Portugal drew the attention of Spartak Moscow, who duly signed him to a three-year contract.
