A youth player at PAOK Thessaloniki, he was loaned out to Larissa in 1999 and then spent two more years at second division AV Kavala, ending one of those seasons as the league’s top scorer. Recalled by PAOK, Salpingidis would then score the small matter of 50 goals in 103 games, establishing himself as the club’s first-choice striker and captain and the leading goalscorer in the land, and also claiming a place in the Greece side.

After falling out with PAOK, he joined Panathinaikos for the third-highest transfer fee ever paid in Greek football, and repaid part of it in scoring a hat-trick on his league debut against Aigaleo.

A member of the Greece side that contested the Men’s Olympic Football Tournament Athens 2004, Salpingidis has been a permanent fixture in the full national team since 2005 and formed part of the squad that unsuccessfully defended Greece’s UEFA EURO title in Austria and Switzerland in 2008.","FCD4DE51CBA4497A941CDE925DCB26D2":"Greece","781CC09C30E6A152":"1","B6A0187759F85483BB8FCFF97E557B3EF40C5B869FAFCEA6":"0","F4645409D3EE42C9":"590","B6A0187759F85483D714EA91FD933428":"0","5C3036D26CFC912788B0712D1AAE3BCF":"\u20ac 1,800,000","9CFA5380AB449F58B34CD68741B77812":"0","5588923A723573201F6804A11C3F390A":"14","4CC9C981935F4DF5":"PAOK Saloniki","70545F9392E8422F11E2D5550E456F39":"Panathinaikos","1D8DD001D97C012A":"172cm","38882684D19FD665":"Dimitrios Salpingidis","722D75C33935B48A":"74kg","e_index":8};
