Several clubs had been watching the youngster but it was Billy Davies who was willing to take the gamble and so far it's proved to be a great decision.

After starting the season (04/05) with two goals for the Shakers Nugent finished it by netting his first goal for his country - that's some rise to fame but the scouser takes everything in his stride.

With 12 goals in 29 appearances for Bury last season the 20-year-old continued his goalscoring form when he made the move up two divisions to the Championship.

The pacy striker, instantly recognisable by his short, quick steps forged an impressive partnership with Richard Cresswell, the duo netting 14 goals between them in the 16 games they both started.

Nugent's first goal came at QPR when he came on as a second half sub and the goal and performance earned him his first start in the following match and he didn't disappoint, scoring in the televised clash with Ipswich.

He went on to net a further 7 goals including four goals in as many games in April.

He finished the season as joint leading scorer with Cressie and although the domestic season ended in disappointment Nugent went on to make his first appearance in the three lions of England.

Peter Taylor named the youngster in his squad for the prestigious Toulon Tournament and after playing in all three group games and the semi final, he finally grabbed his first goal in the third placed play off with Mexico.

Last season he made the step up to the U21 squad, making two substitute appearances in the matches with Wales and Poland in September but shortly after the youngster was struck down by impetigo which left him hospitalised.

Just one sub appearance in almost two months followed before he finally got back amongst the goals at Loftus Road on November 22nd.

He was named the Championship Young Player of the Year award at the inaugural Football League awards before going on to score another five goals, including two more against Ipswich to take his tally against them to four for the season.

As he was desperately searching for his hat trick, injury struck and Nugent left the field on a stretcher after breaking his fifth metatarsal which was supposed to rule him out for the remainder of the season.

But just six weeks and five days later the youngster was back, coming on as a sub in the final league game of the season before scoring the opening goal in the Play-Off semi final first leg at Elland Road.

After suffering disappointment for the second year in succession Nugent is hoping for a more successful season next season, both on and off the pitch as he seeks to remain fit and healthy for the whole campaign.
