National team

It came as a major surprise when Bulgaria's newly-appointed coach Plamen Markov selected the Serbian-born Jankovic in his first match in charge against Croatia in February 2002. But the veteran attacker proved an ideal foil for Dimitar Berbatov.

UEFA EURO 2004? qualifying

Jankovic got Bulgaria's campaign off to an ideal start by scoring his side's first goal in the crucial 2-0 win over Belgium in Brussels in the opening fixture. He made six starts and one substitute appearance as Bulgaria topped Group B.

Club

The playmaker started his career in Serbia and Montenegro, representing FK Borac Cacak, FK ?eleznik and FK Vojvodina. But it was following his move to Bulgarian side PFC Litex Lovech in March 2000 that Jankovic's career took off.

2000: He was an instant success at Litex, scoring 13 goals in his first season and helping the club lift the Bulgarian Cup. By the end of that campaign he was regarded as Litex's most important player and he received Bulgarian citizenship later in 2001.

2002: Jankovic was the leading scorer in the Bulgarian first division with 13 goals from 20 matches when the Chinese champions Dalian Shide signed him for €1.7m in March 2002. He helped Dalian retain the championship the following season.

2003/04: Litex jumped at the chance to take Jankovic back on loan when the forward expressed a desire to return to Bulgaria in January, signing him on the same day as goalkeeper Zdravko Zdravkov.
