A quick and skilful midfield player, Andrejs Rubins is almost exclusively left-footed and poses a particular threat from set-pieces.

National team

Having graduated from Latvia's Under-18 and Under-21 sides, Rubins made his first senior appearance in a friendly against Tunisia in November 1998. He was a regular in the qualifying campaigns for UEFA EURO 2000? and the 2002 FIFA World Cup, both of which ultimately ended in disappointment.

Rubins was well established in his berth on the left of midfield, appearing in all eight group matches and both play-off games.

Club

A product of Skonto FC's youth system, Rubins moved to Sweden and ?sters IF at the age of 17, before returning to Skonto two years later. Part of the title-winning teams of 1998, 1999 and 2000, he added the Latvian Cup in 1998 and 2000.

2000: Rubins joined compatriot Aleksandrs Kolinko at English side Crystal Palace FC in 2000/01 but was unable to gain a regular place over the next three years, making a total of 31 league appearances.

2002: Signed for Russia's FC Spartak Moskva in December 2002 but did not play a first-team game. Rubins subsequently transferred to FC Shinnik Yaroslavl, for whom he appeared in 24 league matches in 2003.

While at Crystal Palace, Rubins scored a spectacular goal against Liverpool FC in the 2001 English League Cup semi-final.
