Profile:
Until March, Surprise Moriri’s chances of reaching the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ looked slim to almost non-existent due to a knee injury which kept him on the fringes for the better part of this season. The Mamelodi Sundowns player missed out on the FIFA Confederations Cup selection last summer because of the same injury. However, he has recovered in time to secure a place in coach Carlos Alberto Parreira’s 23-man squad.

Moriri has been South Africa’s secret weapon in times of desperation, but he is known for sometimes lacking consistency at international level. He brings composure and shape in midfield whenever introduced, and Parreira has utilised him upfront whenever the Brazilian employs the 4-5-1 formation. And it is his knack for scoring sporadic yet vital goals for South Africa that has kept him in the side. Selected for the previous CAF Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana 2008, he never raised him game during the tournament, and at 30, he is aware that he is not getting any younger and needs to make an impact at this level.

Moriri made his professional breakthrough with the then-Silver Stars (now Platinum Stars) in 2002. A year later he joined Mamelodi Sundowns, and in the 2005/06 season, he was voted as the South African Premier Soccer League (PSL) Player of the Season following a sterling and impressive display for Sundowns. It was during the same period that he earned his international colours against Lesotho in 2003.
