Dede was born in Mineiro, one of Brazil’s industry sites, as second of a six brothers community – perfect conditions for “3 versus 3” matches. “The living room was our largest chamber – easy to turn into a football field. The doors leading to the kitchen and the bedroom were our goals”. Dede passed the youth departments of his local club Atletico Mineiro. Later on, he promoted to the first squad.
Dede was awarded the „Silver Shoe“ in 1998, a decoration for Brazil’s second best wing defender, but turned to BVB within the same year. His efforts and his spectacular way of playing brought him lots of sympathy with the supporters, same as a secured position within the first BVB squad. Dede was one of the guarantors of the 2002 Bundesliga triumph. His debut to the “Selecao” took place in 2004 when Brazil prevailed Hungary 4-1. Six years before, a knee injury had prevented development in Brazil’s Olympic team. Meanwhile, 27-year old Dede is one of the most indigenous with BVB, only Lars Ricken is ahead of him here. His leading qualities made him earn the attribute to be vice team captain; he was first captain even in several matches. Additional merits he achieved through integrating the other Brazilians into the team. Dede exceeded his contract until 2007 last winter under acceptance of lower payments.
STRENGHTS „On his position, Dede’s one of the top three players in Bundesliga“, manager Watze said about the left defender who found his strenghts within the back four after some interludes realigning towards the midfield. He plays very safe, and his duels are absolutely successful. It’s hard to separate him from the ball; his dribblings are unbeatable, playing offence same as defence. All this is added by brilliant assists and hard shots.
SEASON REVIEW Dede played the second legs matches as left defender again which improved his efforts very much. He was involved in 33 out of 34 matches, missing in Freiburg (2-2) only due to his fifth booking. 63 per cent duels won was the top value within the team, additionally throughout Bundesliga on his position. The only way to stop him were fouls: no other BVB player was fouled more often (90). Three out of his 81 crosses became goal assists. He prepared five goals in total, more than he ever did before, but unfortunately failed to score himself.
