Despite his young age Andreas Isaksson is far from inexperienced between the posts, having been a regular in the Allsvenskan since the age of 17.
National team
Isaksson played in all ten group games and the play-off defeat by Belgium as Sweden narrowly failed to qualify for the 2002 UEFA European Under-21 Championship. However, the custodian was destined for the senior team, and after making his debut as a half-time substitute for Magnus Hedman in a 1-1 draw against Switzerland in March 2002, he was included in the squad for that summer's FIFA World Cup where he was an unused substitute.
UEFA EURO 2004? qualifying
Profited from an injury to Hedman to replace him as Sweden's No1. Isaksson kept goal in the final seven qualifiers, conceding just three times as the Scandinavians won Group 4.
Club
He was given the opportunity to shine in the Swedish top flight as a teenager, when Trelleborgs FF goalkeeper Daniel Andersson was injured, and took Sweden by storm.
1999: After only ten appearances he was sold to Italian giants Juventus FC for €1.5m, but spent 18 months in Turin without playing a first-team game. None the less, when he returned to Sweden with Djurg?rdens IF, he proved that his time alongside Gianluigi Buffon had done him good.
2001: Isaksson impressed as Djurg?rden ran Hammarby all the way before missing out on the championship by a point. Both club and player were to enjoy a wonderful 2002, though, as the Stockholm side won a first title since 1966 and eliminated FC K?benhavn from the UEFA Cup. Isaksson was then ever-present when Djurg?rden defended their crown in style in 2003, winning the Allsvenskan by seven points from Hammarby.
